Thames Tower Shortlisted in The Aj Architecture Awards

Thames Tower has been shortlisted in the ‘Workplace of the Year (above 20,000sqm)’ category in the AJ Architecture Awards 2018.

The project has been recognised for its huge contribution to the Reading community and beyond. As a beacon of sustainability, well-being and design, Thames Tower distinguishes itself as a landmark building that has significantly contributed to Reading’s development.

Sustainable workplace, fit for all

Biophilic design, new high-performance terracotta cladding, tap sensors to reduce water consumption, “man-on-auto-off” lighting have all contributed to Thames Tower becoming a more environmentally conscious member of the community. It has achieved an EPC B, a BREEAM rating of ‘Very Good’ and has been recognised as a great example of ‘creative sustainability’ through winning a RIBA Sustainability Award earlier this year.

In addition to outstanding sustainable design, the judges will consider each project in great detail, assessing how each project has met or exceeded the brief. They will assess how each project has promoted community and client engagement, the use of space and the creation of a sense of place.

Flexible workplace, fostering community

Amenities play a vital role in engaging people, therefore the design sought to provide facilities and areas that would build a sense of community at Thames Tower. Each office floor can provide break out areas and seating space, creating the ‘coffee shop workplace’ feel that modern companies strive for and helps attract fresh, young talent.

On the ground floor, the creation of the new restaurant/café and shared quiet areas add to this community feel. It also provides tenants with a place for collaboration, communication and creativity.

This creatively designed amenity, coworking and events space promotes collaborative working and dynamic engagement with the local community. An engaging social programme, including yoga classes and a programme of events, ensure tenants have one of the best run amenities in the entire region.

Having led the scheme from the outset, Jai Sanghera, Chairman of dn-a, is looking forward to hosting the AJ Architecture Awards judges to unravel some of the mysteries and nuances behind Thames Tower. The project certainly exceeded its initial brief and has been integral in creating a vibrant internal and external community within Reading.

It has not only put Reading ‘back on the map’, it has created a sense of place that exceeds the concept of what a workplace should and can be.
